Heather "The Main Event" Martin

What is your nickname and if you do have a nickname how did you get it?

My nickname is "The Main Event". It was given to me by someone very close to me because on my very first fight I was asked to be the main event fighter. I won that night by decision, and it just stuck with me.

Why fight MMA?

I started martial arts when I was five. I got into boxing when I was around 16. I missed all the content of martial arts, and wanted to get back into it.

Being a female fighter, what are the biggest obstacles you have had to overcome? The hardest obstacle for me is trying to balance everything out. I am in the gym training at crazy hours, I work, and I have two small boys (3 and 5). There's a lot of times that I don't get to spend with my kids because I go to several different cities and states training.

What does your family think about you fighting?

My 5 yr old just got to come to his first fight last weekend. He's gone to grappling tournaments cheering me on, but he loves it. I won't let my 3 yr old see me fight yet. My dad has always been a huge supporter my mother has never supported me as a fighter. She has always tried to get me to quit fighting.

Who is the best MMA fighter in your opinion?

I'm biased. I am a HUGE G.S.P. fan.

Who was your toughest opponent?

My toughest fight (hands down) was Ylander Ross. She is an Olympic power lifter, a former semi pro football player, and just a tough woman. It went to a decision that ended in a draw.

What fighter do you resemble?

That's hard for me to say. I'm not really sure I resemble anyone. I kind of try to just do my own thing. I've taken traditional boxing infuesed it with BJJ, JKD concepts, and everything else I've learned on the way to just find what works for me and use it.

Where do you train and who are your trainers?

Primarily Paragon out of Corinth Mississippi, but I crosstrain with several gyms. I've trained with TKO out of Knoxville Tn, I've gotten to do some at Big Bully in Evansville In., Gautier's JKD in my hometown, and bullpit out of Jackson Tn as well.

What do you look for in other fighters?

If it's an opponent I'm about to face I look for strength's, weaknesses, confidence level, overall anything and everything from where they hold their heads when they fight down to what style footwork they use.

What motivates you to fight?

I've been through a lot of really hard stuff throughout my life. I use that as motivation to show that you can overcome, anything is possible.

What would you do if you were not a fighter?

Fighting is such a huge part of who I am, I'm not really sure what I would do. It's one thing that I have been a part of nearly my whole life. I wouldn't be who I am without this sport.

If you could fight anyone in the sport of MMA, who would it be and why?

Obviously, I am going to say Cris Cyborg. She's the best in the sport right now. I want to be able to compete with the greatest. To me that's what really matters. You can have 100 wins against marshmellows and it mean nothing, but you have one win against the greatest, that truly means something.

If you could fight anyone NOT in the sport, who would it be and why?

Wow, I'll go with either Paris Hilton or Lady Gaga. They both make me cringe when they open their mouth's lol.

Have you any superstition or mania on fighting days?

Nothing to bad, I have a yellow bracelet that was given to me by a friend in rememberance of a fighter named Matt Maupin. Matt was a P.O.W. in Iraq. Matt's body was missing for several years before being brought back into the states. The only time I EVER take it off is to fight, and I keep it in my corner even then.

Tell us about your next fight, who you are fighting and the training involved for this fight?

My next fight is an all female card in Evansville In. It's being promoted by gFight, and will feature some of the best females in the ammy sport. I am fighting Laura-Elder Hill who is on the Team USA Pancration team. Laura also placed 3rd in NAGA Nationals. I know that Laura has a strong ground game so I am working really hard on defenses and getting back up to my feet. Cardio has been a huge part of my getting ready to face her.

Are there Fans, Friends or sponsors you would like to thank and give a shout out to? I have to send love out to my Paragon guys and to my sponsors MMA Blizzard and Talk MMA. I will always have mad love for the MMA fans because they are the reason our dreams are possible.

What is your nickname and if you do have a nickname how did you get it?
No nickname yet.

Why fight MMA?

I have always been a big fan of MMA especially female fights. I’m the kind of person that likes a challenge it keeps life interesting. I started MMA just to see if I could do it and once I was training I fell in love with it and after my first fight I knew its what I wanted to do win or lose.

Being a female fighter, what are the biggest obstacles you have had to overcome?
I don’t feel like being a female fighter gives me any more obstacles than any other fighter. I train with all men and I feel like if anything training with someone stronger than me helps prepare for someone I’m more evenly matched with.

What does your family think about you fighting?
My family supports me 100%, my mom has a hard time watching but hasn’t missed a fight yet.

Who is the best MMA fighter in your opinion?
Cristiane Cyborg Santos. I’m a big fan. I will have the opportunity to meet her and attend a training seminar by her later this month. I am really looking forward to that.

Who was your toughest opponent?
My toughest opponent was my last fight Whitney Pace.

What fighter do you resemble?
My coach Cj Beard

Where do you train and who are your trainers?
I train @ team Power House in Idaho Falls, Idaho. My trainers are CJ Beard and Korry Beard

What do you look for in other fighters?
Endurance & Aggression. I also favor a ground fighter. A good mix of these makes an exciting fight

What motivates you to fight?
I love the challenge. It’s not just about the fight it’s about everything leading up to the fight. The preparation in training and pushing myself to be better… that’s what I love.

What would you do if you were not a fighter?

Before anything, I am a mother. I have a 5 year old little girl named Taylor.

If you could fight anyone in the sport of MMA, who would it be and why?

Kerry Vera to be the best you have to beat the best.
If you could fight anyone NOT in the sport, who would it be and why? No one in particular.

Have you any superstition or mania on fighting days?

I don’t really have any superstition. I try to keep things simple and try not think about how the fight will go because anything can happen I wouldn’t want to limit myself or disappoint myself all that matters to me is that I do my best.

Tell us about your next fight, who you are fighting and the training involved for this fight?
My next fight is March 6 Maygen Sato vs Glena "Heartless" Avila for 125lbs female championship. Rumble at the Roseland #50 I am excited about this fight. She is a completely different kind of fighter than I had in my last two fights. This fight is my biggest challenge yet and I’m training hard for it.

Are there Fans, Friends or sponsors you would like to thank and give a shout out to?
Fans… My Daughter and family are biggest fans. I would like to thank Revgear for sponsoring me.
